Depending on which software you used to do your taxes last year, you might be able to import some of the personal information from your 2015 return (name, Social Insurance Number, and date of birth) directly into your 2016 return using the Past Return Import functionality. Click the link below for the software you used last year and follow the listed steps to import your data.
Note: If you skip the carry forward process, you can find most of your carry forward information on your latest Notice of Assessment (NOA) or Notice of Reassessment (NOR).
H&R Block Software
If you choose to import from our H&R Block 2015 product, you’ll be able to directly bring in not only all your personal information, but also your HBP/LLP amounts, unused tuition amounts, moving expenses, and some additional provincial tax credit amounts. What a huge timesaver!
- On the Welcome page, click Start a new return.
- The Import your personal and tax data from last year’s return page opens.
- Select H&R Block Online and click Next. Provided you’re using the same sign in information as last year, your information will automatically be imported into your 2016 return.
- Click Choose File.
- Browse to the location of the file, select the file you want to import, and click Open.
Tip: To find your H&R Block tax file from last year, look for the file extension .t15.
- Click Import. Once the data is imported, an Import summary page opens showing you the information that has been imported.
- Click Start Preparing My Return to proceed with your current year’s tax return.
TurboTax Desktop™
- On the Welcome page, click Start a new return.
- The Import your personal and tax data from last year’s return page opens.
- Select TurboTax Download product and click Next.
- Click Choose File.
- Browse to the location of the file, select the file you want to import, and click Open.
Tip: To find your TurboTax tax file from last year, look for the file extension .tt15.
- Click Import. Once the data is imported, an Import summary page opens showing you the information that has been imported.
- Click Start Preparing My Return to proceed with your current year’s tax return.
Note: If you have already purchased TurboTax Download 2016 in the last 60 days and would like to return it for a refund so you get to do your own taxes with H&R Block’s tax software, contact their customer service at 1-800-434-6820. You can seek a refund however and wherever you purchased the software from, even if it’s from a retail store. Click this link for more information.
UFile Windows™ or UFile Pro™
- On the Welcome page, click Start a new return.
- The Import your personal and tax data from last year’s return page opens.
- Select File Windows or UFile Pro and click Next.
- Click Choose File.
- Browse to the location of the file, select the file you want to import, and click Open.
Tip: To find your UFile tax file from last year, look for the file extension .u15.
- Click Import. Once the data is imported, an Import summary page opens showing you the information that has been imported.
- Click Start Preparing My Return to proceed with your current year’s tax return.

I’m using my mobile device to prepare my 2016 return. Can I still import my information from last year’s return?
Absolutely! If you used H&R Block’s Online tax software last year and you want to import your information directly into this year’s return, all you need to do is follow the steps outlined in the H&R Block Software section above.
