You will see the following error message in H&R Block’s 2016 tax software if your dependant is transferring more than $5,000 of his or her federal tuition, education, and textbook amount to you:

The federal amount your dependant is transferring to you from his/her tuition, education, and textbook amounts can't be more than $5000.00. Please correct the amount you entered. [error code: 187]

How do I fix this?

To correct this error, enter the correct federal amount your dependant is transferring to you from his or her tuition, education, and textbook amounts, on your dependant’s Tuition amounts page. The federal amount that can be transferred cannot be more than $5,000.

Note: To find the Tuition amounts page, click on your dependant’s name in the left navigation panel and click the TRANSFERS icon.
